At any age, kids love to do something with their hands. Some love to tear papers, some others prefer playing with sands, while the others like using pencils better.

Without realizing it, what these kids do is actually a process of creativity. They are expressing themselves with those activities. And, they learn about being artistic.

As parents, it is better for you to understand the stages of skills your kids might develop in term of art based on their age. Here are those stages:

  • 18 months – 3 years

a. They love coloring, drawing, painting but they don’t really care about the result.

b. They like drawing round. They can do it on the walls, doors, sofa, etc. Some parents let them do that, some others don’t. If you are grouped with the last ones, it is ok, it’s just it would be wise for you to get them another media such as a white or black board.

c. They love finger-printing.

  • 3 years

a. While drawing, painting or coloring, they are more goal-oriented.

b. They can use scissors.

c. They can easily hold pencils, pens or crayons.

d. They love creating simple patterns or shapes.

  • 4 years

a. They can hold pencils, pens or crayons just like adults do.

b. They can draw figures of human being with head, hands, and feet.

c. They can cut using scissors following a pattern or line.

d. They can tell what they draw.

  • 5 years

a. They can start an activity with planning. They can plan what to make, what to use and which colors to use.

b. They can draw details although it doesn’t always have to be proportional, for example, too big head or too long hands while drawing a human being.

c. They can mix colors to find one specific color they will be using.

Are your kids developing well? Or even faster?

Remember, keep stimulating your kids!
